Pros and Cons of Music Piracy

REMEMBER

Music Piracy has always been around but because of the proliferation of hardware and software and the development of the internet, which has led to a significant change in audience consumption habits, digital piracy has grown and rocked the music industry by hitting it's core market. David Gauntlett attributes this shift in the industry from institutionally controlled to more audience led to the change from push to pull media (web 1.0 to web 2.0). Clay Shirky outlines how the 'fluidity' of media has seen the industry transform. Technological and media convergence have seen an increase in audiences obtaining music for free from a multitude of sources.  Youtube 'ripping' saw a 25% increase last year and the music industry claims that 12.5 billion in revenue was lost last year with artist development funds becoming almost depleted. However, there are seemingly pros and cons to piracy;
